Celebrating SND success with the St. Pete Times

After many years of being the uncelebrated underdog (relatively speaking), this year the St. Pete Times made up for it with a big sweep in this year’s SND (Society for News Design) competition. So Sara Quinn of Poynter had the great idea to ask me (as a 10-year Times alumnus and avid fan of the paper) to co-host a little party to honor the winners. It was a great afternoon with friends old and new.

The paper won 37 awards of excellence, mainly in the features design categories. The innovative Latitudes (Sunday arts/culture/books section) won in the section category. The Largo Times regional section won in the redesign category, after conversion from broadsheet to tab. Six staffers won for portfolios: Don Morris, Josh Engleman, Jennifer DeCamp, Jessica Parker Gilbert, Andy Bradford and John Pendygraft.

“We had a great year and had come such a long way. I don’t think the design managers realized that until we got everything out on the table for consideration for SND,” said Patty Cox, deputy managing editor/presentation. “So after years of winning just a handful of awards at a time, we were thrilled to break into the Top Five. It’s hugely rewarding after restructuring the department, introducing new technology and finally redesigning the paper. I can’t say enough about the great teamwork and collaborative atmosphere we’ve fostered here. This design team rocks!”

Here is a link to my Flickr album showing a few scenes of party-going fun with the St. Pete crew, on a sunny March afternoon in St. Petersburg, Florida. You can probably search newsdesigner.com for pages from individual team members. Congrats to all SND winners, and all entrants too, and anyone who just designs pages and works for newspapers as well! Best wishes for another great year!
