Rare ‘El Mundo’ book at SND Foundation auction

Heading this week to the SND conference in Denver? Or maybe not, but you’re a huge fan of illustration? Consider bidding on this hefty and gorgeous boxed coffee table book, “Todo El Arte De El Mundo,” a rare artifact from a golden era of illustration at Spain’s El Mundo newspaper. All proceeds from the auction go to support student scholarships and travel grants to further interest in news design.

This limited edition publication, crisply printed on heavy glossy stock in black and white with silver inks, was issued to celebrate the glorious illustrations from El Mundo from 1989 to 1994. The copy being donated to SND (numbered, #589 of 1500 printed) was a generous gift to me during a visit to the newsroom in Madrid in the mid-1990s, from legendary Art Director Carmelo Caderot, Illustrator Ricardo Martinez and Infographics director Mario Tascon. (Thanks to staff artist Emilio Amade for coordinating the visit.)

It features 280 pages filled with stunning, impactful illustrations, any of which would probably be suitable for framing on their own, by staff artists including Ulises Culebro, Ramon Rodriguez, Victoria Martos, Juan Velasco, and others. I don’t know of another newspaper in the world, at the time, that could approach the talent coming out of this newsroom.

Included here are a few quick snapshots of spreads from the publication which just don’t do justice to how glorious it is. Consider checking it out at the auction in Denver, or if not able to attend and you want to bid, email me at ron (at) ronreason.com, and I’ll check with the organizers to see if off-site bids are allowed.

Good luck to the organizers of SND Denver, let’s raise some cash for the kids!

[Special thanks to anyone left at El Mundo who bestowed this glorious gift on me. I hope you don’t mind I am sending it back into the universe for the enjoyment and benefit of others!]
