“Design With Reason” is the companion blog to ronreason.com.
I am a newspaper, magazine and digital consultant-designer-editor and Poynter Institute Visiting Faculty member with more than 20 years of storytelling running through my veins. I have redesigned and provided staff, organizational and strategic training for publications around the world, including The Dallas Morning News, Boston Herald, The Harvard Crimson, Emirates Evening Post (Dubai), The Standard (Nairobi, Kenya), Orlando Sentinel, magazines including Advertising Age, Crain’s Chicago Business, Modern Healthcare and Professional Builder, and many others. My clients range from small startup titles and community weeklies to some of the world’s largest publishing groups. In the last 18 months (as of December 2011) I have worked with the Cincinnati Enquirer; alternative weeklies such as the Chicago Reader and Creative Loafing (Atlanta); niche publications such as Catholic Health World and Arkansas Business weekly; mainstream metro daily newspapers such as The Tampa Tribune, Richmond Times-Dispatch and Winston-Salem Journal; and several dozen community daily and weekly newspapers, primarily in Virginia and North Carolina, owned by Media General. I am also designing annual reports and have worked this year on special projects for the American Bar Association. (Additional bio information here.)
This blog relays observations about the clients who fascinate and challenge me, the places I visit, the challenges and opportunities in news publishing today. I hope the numerous visual samples and links are of help to students and professional journalists, publishers, and designers alike. I am based in Chicago but spend time on-site as projects warrant.
